Avocado Oil: benefits and consumptions

What is avocado oil

Avocado oil is an edible oil pressed from the fruit of the Persea americana (Avocado).

Is a food oil, so it is used as an ingredient in dishes, and as a cooking oil, but it has many other uses in other fields thanks to the healthy, regenerative and moisturizing properties.

This vegetable oil has an unusually high smoke point, which means it can be used to cook at higher heat and is great for stir-frys. If you heat oil past its smoke point, it not only harms the flavor, but many of the nutrients in the oil degrade and the oil will release harmful compounds called free radicals.

For Avocado Oil we are talking about temperatures around 250 °C (482 °F) for unrefined oil (chemically untreated) and 271 °C (520 °F) for refined oil (chemically treated to make it edible), but the exact smoke point depends heavily on the processing method.

Avocado oil contains both monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, and it has one of the highest monounsaturated fat contents among cooking oils.

It’s high in fat like olive oil, but if sometimes olive oil tastes too strong for the palate, avocado oil has a mild, smooth and buttery taste.

It’s a mix of health:

  • vegan
  • naturally gluten free
  • dairy free
  • cholesterol free
  • anti fungal
  • anti viral
  • antibacterial
  • helps maintain a healthy blood pressure.

This vegetable oil with exceptional health characteristics is high in energy and micro-nutrients. These include vitamins A, B, C and D, the antioxidant vitamin E, minerals such as iron, magnesium, copper and potassium, as well as omega-3 and beta-carotene.

A few studies in animals show that avocado oil may benefit heart health, including reduced blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels.

Furthermore, avocado oil is full of lutein, a carotenoid that improves eye health and may lower the risk of age-related eye diseases.
